What Size Dumpster Do I Need?

July 14, 2017

Renting a dumpster is an important but easily overlooked part of throwing a party or hosting an event. You probably also need rented dumpsters for construction jobs and brush clearance. But all of these occasions are very different, and each creates its own amount of waste. So what size dumpster do you need for these jobs? It depends.

Small Events and Intimate Get-Togethers

You may not think of renting a waste receptacle when you’re just having a few friends over or hosting a block party, but this is actually an ideal time to have one of the smaller units delivered to your home before the event and carted away the next morning. ESI offers compact, manageable event containers made from recyclable corrugated cardboard. What’s great about these is that they fold flat for shipping and storage, so it’s easy to lay in enough of them to cover a whole block or open-air park area, and then just send them in for recycling when they’ve served their purpose.

Carts are another option for small-scale cleanups. If your family reunion is in two days, your home’s garbage can is half-full already, and it will be another three or four days before your regular curbside pickup, a 96-gallon rolling cart from ESI might be just what you need to haul off trash and recyclables when the party’s over.

Yard Work, Single-Room Cleanouts and the Occasional Appliance

Parties aren’t the only time you need convenient trash disposal. When you’re working on a small yard cleanup or cleaning out a single room in your house, nothing will do but a small roll-on/roll-off dumpster. These come in various sizes, and each is classed according to how much interior volume it offers.

The smallest size most dumpster rental companies offer in this class is the 10-yard container. These measure 4 feet high x 8 feet wide x 13 feet long on the outside, and they provide 10 cubic yards of space inside before your trash overtops the rim. If it helps, you can think of that as roughly nine dishwashers. These units can hold up to 2 tons of waste and are perfect for small construction jobs and relatively minor home improvements, such as tearing down a deck.

What Size Dumpster Do I Need for Really Big Messes?

Roll-on/roll-off dumpsters get a lot bigger than the 10-yarders. Available in 20-, 30- and 40-yard sizes, these containers all have the same 22 x 8 footprint, so they all fit in your driveway, but their sides rise higher as their capacity increases, allowing more waste inside before you need a second dumpster.

As a rule, the 20-yard containers are good for large-scale remodeling, while a 30-yard model works best for ground-up construction. Consider a 40-yard unit for clearing out acreage, and for anything larger than that, you might just need two or more smaller containers.

ESI keeps all these containers available for quick delivery and hauling.
